I'm growing a mullet in memory of my Dad.
In 2023 I lost my Dad to suicide. I had spoken to him about seeking mental health care a few times and for a variety of reasons, but he often told me that it didn’t work for him or he’d ‘think about it’. I think that he held some lingering stigma about seeking help for mental health, that he felt he needed to deal with it on his own. I have spent every day since he died wondering if there was something more I could have done to prevent that from happening.
I know that I can’t change the past, and dwelling on things I can’t change won’t help me or my Dad. So I’m directing my energy into something more productive, by trying to support an organisation that helps people like my Dad and hopefully contributing to breaking down some of the stigma that prevented him from talking about his struggles.
Dad had a pretty sick mullet when he was younger, and I know he would’ve found it hilarious to see me with a mullet too. So I am cutting a mullet and maintaining it this April to raise funds for the Black Dog Institute in honour of my dad.
